Name
Healing Stress and Trauma through Dynamic Mindfulness
Date & Time
Friday, September 27, 2019, 9:45 AM - 11:00 AM
Description
Chronic stress impairs students' mental, behavioral, and social-emotional wellbeing by a) heightening vigilance and threat perception, b) limiting their ability to self-regulate emotions, and c) harming their cognitive functions that are essential to learning. Low-income communities experience disproportionately high chronic stress, traumatic stress, and post-traumatic stress, arising from structural, social, and financial inequity. In this interactive workshop, participants will gain a deep understanding of how chronic stress and trauma impacts brain functioning and our ability to learn, focus attention, regulate emotions, have empathy, and cope in healthy ways. Participants will experience the ABC's of DMind: 1) mindful physical movement (Action) to heal trauma and release tension, 2) Breathing techniques to regulate emotions, and 3) Centering practices to improve focus. Through hands-on activities, we will explore personally optimal ways to embed evidence-based trauma-informed Dynamic Mindfulness tools into daily classroom activities to promote SEL and stress resiliency skills for a more joyful and productive learning environment.
