Name
Mental Health and Psychosocial Support for Children after Disaster
Date & Time
Friday, September 27, 2019, 9:45 AM - 11:00 AM
Description
Children's recovery and development in adversity requires a holistic approach - where social and educational services, safety and basic rights are combined with play-based interventions to restore and strengthen brain functioning. It requires multi-sectoral and multi-tiered support where various stakeholders collaborate to strengthen child safety and resilience. Save the Children provides schools and communities with structured programs designed to support emotional development for children. Programs include community-based activities that promote the ability of families and communities to support children and each other, resume everyday activities and heal from psychological distress. In this session, we will highlight the ways we work with schools and school-based professionals and share opportunities to build our community's capacity to develop protective factors, help children cope, and build resilience for the future. We will introduce several of our psychosocial support curricula, including Journey of Hope, HEART, and Shelter from the Storm through hands-on activities. Participants will receive examples of psychosocial support activities aimed at preventing and reducing the negative impact of crisis situations on the emotional well-being of children and their families.
