Dr. Hill will present the suicide Safety Planning Intervention. The presentation will include an overview of the situations in which safety planning is recommended, as well as a brief review of the evidence base that supports the use of suicide safety planning. An overview of the safety planning process will be presented, along with a step-by-step walk through of effective safety planning with youth and their parents. Safety planning steps will be discussed, including identifying warning signs, appropriate coping skills, identifying supportive adults, and a review of mental health and crisis resources for adolescents. The inclusion of means safety counseling approaches will also be discussed, including practical tips for introducing means safety to parents/guardians. Tips and techniques for effective safety planning and means counseling will be presented, including appropriate follow-up with suicidal youth. Resources for further training will be provided.
