Teaching in a Transcrisis State: SEL Interventions for High Needs, At Risk Youth
Date & Time
Friday, September 27, 2019, 12:15 PM - 1:30 PM
Description
University degrees and licensing boards prepare teachers, mental health professionals and administrators for text book classrooms with a focus on theory and the way things “should be.†What happens when the textbook interventions and therapy modalities traditionally taught do not adequately meet the high needs that students increasingly present with in modern classrooms? In this workshop we will explore three interventions that have been designed and integrated into a campus with an exceptionally high needs student body in response to the overwhelming social emotional and trauma needs when traditional interventions fell short. The use of therapy bunnies, a trauma sensitive, sensory butterfly garden and a campus wide restorative approach with school wide messaging and use of calm down spaces will be discussed from three perspectives; the mental health/social emotional application, the academic integration and finally the administrative implementation. An honest and transparent conversation about the benefits and challenges of stepping outside the box and creating new interventions in response to new increased needs will add to the theory and formal education of participants.
