Name
Understanding and Supporting Grieving Students
Date & Time
Friday, September 27, 2019, 9:45 AM - 11:00 AM
Description
At the beginning of each school year, Bo's Place invites children and teens enrolled in our grief support groups to share the struggles they face at school, with regard to their grief journey. Referencing feedback from group members, this workshop will outline common grief reactions and helpful vs. hurtful comments often heard by bereaved students. As a child's concept of death and how they experience grief is dependent on their developmental level, this workshop will describe children's understanding of grief at different developmental stages and how school professionals can best support them. Participants will be provided an outline for creating a school support plan for grieving students. While Bo's Place specializes in grief related to the loss of a family member, many of the concepts discussed may also relate to the trauma and loss incurred by other adverse childhood experiences. By developing an understanding of children's grief and learning techniques for supporting the bereaved, participants will be better prepared to respond to grieving students in the school setting.
